How to use AI for math homework without cheating yourself
Copying an AI's answer gets the homework done and leaves you exactly as stuck on the test. Used the right way, the same AI can get you unstuck in minutes and leave you able to do the next one alone.
Never ask for the answer
Once you've seen the solution, you can't un-see it, and your brain files the problem as done. You'll recognise it on the test and still not be able to do it. Ask about your working instead.
Ask these instead
- "Here's my working. Where's the first line that's wrong? Don't fix it."
- "What rule should I be using on this step?"
- "Give me a hint, not the next step."
- "I got x = 5. Is that right? Just yes or no."
- "Quiz me on this kind of problem before my test."
Do the step yourself, then check
After a hint, close the chat and try the step. If you're wrong, ask where, not what. The struggle in between is the part that makes it stick.
Watch for the shortcut
If you notice you're pasting in whole questions and reading back solutions, stop. That's the point where the homework stops helping. A tutor that refuses to give answers takes the temptation away entirely.
Check you actually learned it
Pick one problem you finished and do it again on blank paper tomorrow, without help. If you can, you learned it. If you can't, that's the one to practise.
